Whether that sounds familiar to you or you’re just curious about the world of wigs, we asked experts for advice on everything from wig preparation and installation to maintenance and styling. Here’s what you should know about Closure Wig install.
Types Of Wigs
Before even considering wig installation, it is important to understand the various types of wigs available, as prices can range from under $100 for synthetic units to well into the thousands for custom-made designs made from human hair.
- There are numerous wig types to choose from, including lace-front or lace-closure wigs, headband wigs, ready-to-wear wigs, half-wigs, synthetic wigs, human hair wigs, U-part wigs, and more.
- I wanted to push myself, so I decided to start with a lace-front wig, which requires a more detailed installation process than glueless, capless, and headband wigs.
- I knew that once I was comfortable with lace closure, any other type of wig would be a piece of cake.
- However, because I was still a beginner, I chose a synthetic unit over a human-hair wig with a lace closure because it was less expensive. (I also knew that I’d consider making the investment in the future, but not for my first wig.)
Wig Installation Guide
- Hair preparation is essential for achieving the most natural-looking results. “Before you put on your wig, make sure your natural hair is properly cleansed and protected,” Johnson advises. “Whether you’re wearing a braid-down or slicking your hair back, use a heat protectant or moisturizing leave-in conditioner, and make sure your hair is completely dry before placing a wig on top.”
- Those with thicker hair usually wear their hair in a braid-down pattern underneath their wig cap to keep their natural hair flat and in place. In my case, I wear my hair straight underneath my wigs (I’m terrible at braids!) and slick it back into a low ponytail that I flip and tuck underneath my wig cap.
- The next stage of installation necessitates the availability of a few hair tools and styling products.
- “A rattail comb, Got2B Glued Blasting Freeze Spray or similar adhesive—if you’re wearing a lace wig—and light styling products are always handy to ensure your wig is styled the way you want,” Johnson says. “Using a wig cap and a WigGrip protects your natural hair while also keeping the wig in place.”
- Because of the stitched fabric that prevents your wig from rolling back, a wig grip eliminates the need for extra clips, tape, and excessive amounts of glue on your head.
- After you’ve glued your wig to your wig cap, cut the lace with a small razor. “Make sure to only cut a small portion of the hairline lace at a time and do it while the wig is on your head,” Johnson advises.
- “This way, you can follow the pattern of your natural hairline and avoid removing too much lace.” Because razors can cut through lace quickly, figuring out how to cut it requires a lot of attention to detail.
- That’s why it’s a good idea to work slowly to get as close to your natural hairline as possible without cutting any hair from the wig.
