Why Does My Fps Drop When I Unplug My Laptop? [How To Fix]

When it comes to competitive gaming, having a good (60+) frame rate is essential. This is especially important in multiplayer games like PUBG and Overwatch. Consider your FPS dropping to 30 in the middle of a Deathmatch. Isn’t it awful?

When you unplug your laptop, you may notice significant drops in FPS. Let’s look at why this could happen and how to fix it.

Why Does FPS Drops When I Unplug My Laptop?

Usually, there are two reasons:

  • Your power plan on Windows is set to Battery Saver. When the laptop is not plugged in, this plan reduces overall performance. To save power and extend battery life, your laptop runs slower.
  • Your graphics card driver has a power-saving mode enabled. When on battery power, it throttles GPU performance and limits maximum FPS to 30. This all adds up to a choppy and laggy gaming experience.

How To Get High Fps On Battery

  • Change The Power Plan In Windows: Click on the battery in the taskbar notification area. you can go to Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings. This will open up the power options window. Here you can change the setting to High Performance.
  • Disable the power saving mode(Nvidia GPU): Nvidia has a software restriction when running on battery, you can change this setting inside the Nvidia control panel. To disable power saving, open the Nvidia control panel, and go to 3D settings > Manage 3D settings > Program Settings tab. Here, select a program from the dropdown, and set Power management mode = Prefer maximum performance.
  • Check the BIOS/UEFI Settings: To access the BIOS on a Windows laptop, You need to press the BIOS key (set by the manufacturer) when the laptop is powering on. The most common keys include F10F2F12F1DELESC, etc. On the BIOS screen, change any setting related to performance to prefer performance.
  • If none of these methods work then you can simply reinstall windows. Although this may or may not fix the issue.
